Ad Watch -1

Random ramblings on product ads

Maruti Wagon R - A guy stands near his Wagon R with his dog and counts the number of Wagon R's passing by. The count mentioned by him increase incrementally from ten lakh twenty seven or some such number.

Reaction: Now, if you have sold more than ten lakh cars of a particular model, it is great, congrats. But, if you want us to believe that all the ten lakh cars pass through the same road and can be counted by one person (ok, and his dog), then you are mistaken. If you say that the guy in the ad knows that over ten lakh Wagon R's are sold and is just counting a few tens of cars after 10 lakh then the ad is simply a waste of the guy's time as well as ours.

Surf Excel - Stains are good - Various children go out of the way to cover themselves and their clothes with paint, dirt, mud etc.

Reaction: Stains may be good, but the question is - for whom? Do the clothes look good with stains? Is it fun for the persons (or machines) washing the clothes containing the stains? The only thing they are good for is for the sales of the washing powder. The tag line is so brain-dead. It is like a medical company saying 'Diseases are good' to promote its medicines!

Some Helath Drink - A boy who is short for his age faces difficulty in reaching the ground when sitting on his bicycle, cannot reach the mangoes in a tree etc and his mother is worried. He drinks the Health Drink and magically his height increases resulting in one happy family.

Reaction: The effect of the drink on increasing children's height may be debatable. We can even accept that. What is difficult to understand is why on earth would any parents buy their son a bicycle that is two sizes too high for him! Does it show their sadistic nature?
